We spent one night and most of two days in Puebla. Puebla is a big city that is known these days for its industry. Volkswagen has a huge plant there, for example. But like Oaxaca, it has done a fine job maintaining and restoring its colonial heritage in a beautiful town center. It's also famous for its cuisine in fact, Puebla is the home of the famous mole poblano, a fact that's hard to miss when you're visiting the city. |
| That's us on the balcony of our room at the Hotel Colonial. The hotel is a converted Jesuit monastery and has done a great job retaining the old construction while providing a comfortable place to stay. |
| This was the view outside our hotel room. |
| Erica in front of the cathedral. When we were inside, we attached ourselves to a little tour that was being given by a local. That proved well worthwhile, as he was able to point out and explain many details that we could not have picked up on our own.
After the tour, he reminded us that we had just had an experience that was richer than simply taking a spin through the church and then asked for a small donation, which we were more than happy to give him. |
| One of the cathedral towers. There's a legend that when the cathedral was being built, they couldn't figure out how to raise the eight-ton main bell to the top of the bell tower. Everyone left for the night except for a watchman who swore he'd seen angels lift it. The next morning, sure enough, it had been raised to the top. Whatever the official name of the cathedral, it's known in Puebla as La Catedral de los Ángeles (Cathedral of the Angels). |
| A window in a building close to the cathedral, showing the elaborate tile work. The whole building is covered this way. |
| Lalo (a friend of Oscar's), Erica, and Oscar taking a break from walking around Puebla. |
