One day Oscar took us and Lucia to Las Estacas, an "aquatic resort" outside the city of Cuernavaca, a few hours from Mexico City. Las Estacas is a spring-fed oasis in an arid part of Mexico. It was developed as a resort years and years ago (Oscar told me his grandmother used to go) and has some swimming areas, some cabanas, and a few other amenities. It's a no-frills recreation area of the type one might have found in the 50s, pleasantly free of the gloss that a similar area in the US would undoubtedly have. We've gone the last several times we've been in Mexico and have found it a charming destination and a relaxing outing. |
| The main swimming area. You can lounge on the lawn to the left, using the skinny shadows of the palm trees for shelter. |
| Las Estacas means "the stakes" ("Like vampires" Oscar) and we think it got that name from the willowy palm trees that surround the water. |
| The pool formed by the spring. It serves as the headwater for a small river that meanders through the oasis. What looks like a small waterfall isn't always running; the main source of the river is the underground spring, which you can see as the big dark hole in the pool.
That's Oscar and Lucia getting ready to jump in. Brr! |
| Lucia and Oscar swimming (or floating, more like) down the river from the spring. It's like the jungle ride at Disneyland, only real. And no fake hippos. |
| After floating from the spring down the river for a few minutes, you end up here. |
| Another someone floating. |
| Fishies in the water. If you dangle your feet in the water, they nibble your toes oh so gently. |
